Leading with Purpose: Keith Townsend and Fellowship of Christian Athletes

I often say that there are only two things that last for eternity: God’s word and people’s souls.

That’s why I work so hard to help the student-athletes and coaches in the Friends University Athletics Department grow spiritually in their faith in Christ. And as the leader of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) at Friends, it’s what I’ve dedicated my life to.

FCA is the largest interdenominational, school-based Christian sports organization in the United States. And for nearly 70 years, it’s been our mission to impact the world for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes.

But I have to say, Friends University is a special place.

The university does a great job of creating an environment that’s open to spiritual growth and discussion, so I feel very blessed to be able to work here.

Faith and Sport

In many ways, my role at Friends is to bridge the gap between sports and faith. I want coaches and student-athletes to understand that they don’t have to choose one over the other. In fact, I’d argue sports and faith complement each other in so many ways.

The discipline you must have to be successful in sports, the perseverance and hard work it requires, the teamwork and leadership skills you develop — these are all things that help you grow as a person and as a Christian. That’s why it’s my prayer for all 700 student-athletes and coaches at Friends University to come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.

And I want them to be plugged into a local church, too, so they can continue to grow in their faith and glorify God in all that they do.

Walking the Walk

The best part about working at Friends University is that the leadership and administration aren’t just talking the talk when it comes to putting Christ first — they’re walking the walk, too. I’m so grateful to have the freedom to bring the gospel to coaches and athletes at Friends and have it be a part of the culture in the athletics department.

I also love being able to train and mentor leaders within the department who, in turn, reach out to student-athletes and help them grow in their faith. Whether it’s through bible studies, chapel services, or one-on-one mentoring, I’m just blessed to be able to be a part of it all and make a difference in the lives of the student-athletes and coaches at Friends.

It’s a privilege and an honor to do what I do, and I look forward to continuing to serve and impact the Friends community for years to come.
