In the world of college athletics, loyalty is a rare and cherished virtue.
For Dale Faber, that loyalty has been the guiding force behind his enduring connection to Friends University Athletics.
From his early days as a coach to his current role in fundraising, Faber’s journey is a testament to his commitment to the university and the community it serves.
A Homegrown Path
Faber’s journey at Friends University began in 2003 when he took on the role of head coach for the men’s basketball team.
For Faber, coaching at Friends was more than just a job; it was a chance to stay in his hometown of Wichita, Kansas, and make a meaningful impact.
“To do that in coaching, I always thought that was one of my biggest accomplishments,” Faber said. “I never had to move my family, and to move into the college ranks for the second time, I thought, ‘Well, I must have been doing something right, so we’ll keep hanging around.'”
The Influence of Family and Loyalty
Faber’s decision to stay in Wichita and dedicate his career to Friends University was also deeply influenced by family ties.
“My parents were here,” Faber explained. “I was born and raised in Wichita. It was just better I try to stay put as they were getting up in years.””
Beyond family, Faber’s professional journey at Friends was guided by a sense of loyalty, particularly to Dr. Biff Green, the former President of Friends University.
“I felt a strong sense of loyalty to him personally, and that worked its way into a sense of loyalty to the university,” Faber said.
The Impact of Coaching
During his 18-year coaching tenure, Faber achieved numerous successes on the court, including conference championships and tournament titles.
However, for Faber, the true highlights of his coaching career came from the relationships he built with his players.
“The highlights now, after stepping away, are still being able to visit with my former players and enjoy their successes,” Faber reflected. “Those players wanting to share that with me is the best part of it.”
A Transition to Fundraising
In 2021, Faber transitioned from coaching to fundraising, a move he considers a blessing.
“It was a good chance to meet more people and to be able to share with the community all the great things that go on at Friends University.”
A Strong Sense of Community
Faber’s dedication to Friends University over the years is a testament to the sense of community and leadership that defines the institution.
“There’s a strong leadership here and a consistency of coming to work every day where you know what you’re in store for,” Faber emphasized. “It’s a sense of comfort that you don’t have as many ‘what ifs.”
As Faber continues his journey at Friends University, his enduring loyalty to the university and its community remains a driving force.
“It’s been a good run, and I hope it continues,” Faber said.
