Allen Eberwein’s role at Friends University Athletics is a testament to the power of passion and dedication.
With a journey that began in 2008, Eberwein has worn many hats and made countless contributions to the athletic department, showcasing his commitment to both the university and its student-athletes.
In his early years at Friends University, Eberwein took on the role of Director of the Casado Campus Center and Recreational Programs. At the time, the university’s intramural program was in its infancy, with just three activities. Eberwein’s mission was clear: to expand and enrich the program.
Today, that program boasts between 60 and 70 activities annually, a testament to Eberwein’s hard work and dedication.
His involvement with Friends University Athletics began in his second year.
What initially started as assisting with home football games has evolved into a multifaceted role. Eberwein now runs the play clock for football, announces soccer games, manages the scoreboard for volleyball, wrestling, and basketball, and announces baseball and softball games. His willingness to step into various roles highlights his passion for sports and his desire to support the university in any way he can.
Building relationships
For Eberwein, his involvement with athletics goes beyond just fulfilling duties. It’s about building relationships and making connections with student-athletes.
He sees it as an opportunity to support and interact with students in their element, watching them excel in sports they are passionate about. It’s a chance to give back to Friends University, a place that took a chance on him back in 2008.
One of Eberwein’s most cherished memories with Falcon Athletics is when the volleyball team hosted a playoff game in the KCAC tournament. Despite not winning, the experience of hosting a playoff game in the NAIA volleyball tournament was a source of pride for Eberwein.
Another highlight was the men’s basketball team’s victory in the KCAC tournament, which led them to the national tournament. Witnessing the team’s success and the growing support from students and the community was a moment Eberwein holds dear.
Eberwein’s time with Falcon Athletics has also been marked by special relationships with coaches and staff. Coach Monty Lewis, for example, played a significant role in supporting Eberwein’s efforts to grow the intramural program. Coach Lewis encouraged his football players to participate in intramurals, exemplifying the collaborative spirit that Eberwein values.
Coaches Rae Booth and Dale Faber also stand out in Eberwein’s memory. Their appreciation for the work Eberwein and his team put into athletics left a lasting impression. Eberwein recalls an amusing incident with Coach Faber during a basketball game, where a player’s number was not in the book, resulting in a technical foul. Despite the initial tension, they were able to laugh about it later, a good memory for both looking back on it now.

Eberwein’s dedication to Falcon Athletics is rooted in his passion for helping and supporting the university and its student-athletes. He finds joy in being part of the athletic events and contributing to their success. Eberwein sees it as an opportunity to give back to the university that has given him so much.
